Can You Put Wax Paper in the Oven?

By the Avco Boxes team · Updated

No. Wax paper should not go in the oven. Its paraffin or soy wax coating is not heat-resistant, so it can melt onto your food and pan, smoke, and even catch fire. For baking and cooking, use parchment paper (within the temperature printed on its box), a silicone mat or a greased pan. Keep wax paper for cold jobs like wrapping and lining counters.

Why wax paper doesn't belong in the oven

Wax paper is ordinary paper coated with a thin layer of wax, usually paraffin and sometimes soy. At room temperature that coating keeps moisture in and stops food from sticking. In a hot oven, the same coating softens and melts. The paper underneath is still just paper, and once the wax is gone it can scorch, smoke or catch fire, especially on exposed edges or near a heating element.

Even when nothing burns, melted wax can transfer to your cookies, crust or pan, and baked goods can end up stuck to what is left of the sheet. That is the opposite of what you wanted a liner for.

Short version: wax paper is for cold and room-temperature use. Anything going into a hot oven, toaster oven or air fryer needs a liner made for heat, such as parchment paper.

Can you bake or cook with wax paper at all?

Not with heat. People search "can you bake with wax paper" and "can you cook with wax paper" because the two papers look alike in the drawer, but they are built for different jobs. Here is how wax paper holds up in each place it tends to end up:

Where wax paper is and isn't safe to use
WhereWax paper?Notes
Conventional ovenNoThe wax melts and the paper can smoke or burn. Use parchment.
Toaster oven or air fryerNoSame coating, and the heat source is closer to the paper.
Broiler, grill or stovetopNoDirect heat. Neither wax paper nor parchment belongs here.
MicrowaveCheck the boxMany brands say wax paper is fine for loosely covering food to stop splatters.
Fridge and freezerYesGreat for wrapping food and separating layers.
Countertop prepYesLining for breading, rolling dough, dipping chocolate.

You may come across older recipes that line the bottom of a cake pan with wax paper, with the batter covering it completely. Parchment does that job without the risk of exposed wax and paper in a hot oven, so it is the better choice today.

What to use instead of wax paper in the oven

  • Parchment paper: the direct swap. Most parchment is silicone-coated and nonstick, and it is made for baking. Check the box for its maximum temperature, because ratings vary by brand, and keep it away from the broiler and heating elements. See wax paper vs parchment paper for a full side-by-side.
  • A silicone baking mat: reusable and nonstick for cookie sheets; follow the maker's temperature limit.
  • A greased (and floured) pan: the old-fashioned way, and still reliable for cakes and breads.
  • Aluminum foil: useful for covering dishes and lining pans for easy cleanup, though food can stick to it unless it is greased or labeled nonstick.

You might also see "butter paper" or "greaseproof paper" recommended in recipes from outside the US. Those names don't always mean the same product, so read the packaging before it goes near heat. Our guides to butter paper vs wax paper and greaseproof paper explain the differences.

What wax paper is good for

Wax paper is cheap, moisture-resistant and nonstick at room temperature, which makes it handy for plenty of kitchen jobs that never see heat:

  • Wrapping sandwiches, cheese and baked goods.
  • Lining the counter for breading chicken, sifting flour or decorating cookies, so cleanup is a matter of folding up the sheet.
  • Setting chocolate-dipped fruit, truffles, fudge and other no-bake treats.
  • Separating burger patties, cookie dough portions or pancakes before freezing.
  • Rolling out pie dough or cookie dough between two sheets.

If wax paper went in the oven by mistake

It happens, especially when rolls get mixed up. Turn the oven off. If you see smoke or flames, keep the oven door closed so the fire is starved of air, and call 911 if it doesn't go out quickly. Once everything has cooled, remove the paper and wipe any melted wax off the pan and oven. If wax has melted onto the food, the simplest choice is to start that batch again with parchment.

Wax paper in food service

In a commercial kitchen the rule is the same: liners that go in the oven should be parchment, and wax-style paper belongs on the cold side of the line. That cold side is where the paper customers actually see lives, wrapping burgers and subs, lining baskets and trays, and carrying a shop's name out the door.

Avco prints food-safe wrapping sheets made from greaseproof paper for those front-of-house jobs. Options include custom wax paper, burrito and sandwich wrap paper and biodegradable wax paper, in sizes from 6x6 to 14x18 inches on white or kraft. Sheets come 400 per bundle with a 5-bundle minimum, or start at one bundle with low-minimum wax paper. There's a one-time $75 artwork setup, a free digital proof, and everything is made in the USA. See the whole range under custom food paper. They are made for wrapping and lining, not for baking.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you put wax paper in the oven?
The wax coating softens and melts, which can leave wax on your food and pan. The paper can then scorch, smoke or catch fire, particularly at the edges or near a heating element. It is not worth the risk when parchment does the job.
Can wax paper go in the oven at a low temperature?
It is still best not to. Wax paper isn't made for oven heat at any setting, and the coating can soften well below typical baking temperatures. Parchment is the safe choice for warming and baking alike.
Can you put wax paper in an air fryer?
No. An air fryer is a small convection oven with the heating element close to the food, and loose paper can blow around inside it. If your air fryer's manual allows liners, use parchment weighted down by the food.
Can you put wax paper in the microwave?
Many wax paper brands say it can be used to loosely cover food in the microwave to stop splatters. Follow the instructions on your box, and don't confuse microwave use with oven use.
Is parchment paper the same as wax paper?
No. Parchment is usually coated with silicone and made for baking, while wax paper is coated with wax and made for cold use. Our wax paper vs parchment paper guide compares them in detail.
