Custom vs. Stock Pizza Boxes: When Printing Your Own Pays Off

Printing your own pizza boxes pays off once you move enough boxes each week that the setup cost disappears into the per-box price, and when a meaningful share of your pizzas leave the building as delivery or takeout. At Avco, a custom-printed 14" box is $0.75 per box at bundle pricing, plus a $75 artwork setup per order and a 5-bundle minimum. If you are still testing a menu or only box a handful of pizzas a week, plain stock boxes are usually the better call for now.

What printing actually adds

A plain box does one job: it gets the pizza home hot and in one piece. A printed box does that job and carries your name with it. The difference matters most for delivery and takeout, because that box ends up on a kitchen counter or a coffee table, in front of everyone sharing the pizza, after your staff are long out of the picture.

What you can put on the lid is where the value comes from:

  • Your name and logo, so the box is recognizably yours even when it is sitting on someone else's table.
  • A phone number, website or ordering link, so the next order is easy to place.
  • Your social handle, if your customers post food photos.
  • A consistent look across every size you sell, which makes a small shop feel established.

On Avco's custom corrugated pizza boxes, artwork prints in one or two colours on a white or kraft exterior, with a kraft interior. If you want full-colour artwork, clay-coated pizza boxes are available from 10" to 18". For layout ideas that print cleanly in one or two colours, see our pizza box design guide.

The real cost math

A custom order has two parts: the per-box price, which depends on size, and a $75 artwork setup fee per order. Shipping within the US is calculated at checkout and is not included in the numbers below.

Here are Avco's per-bundle prices for custom corrugated pizza boxes:

SizeBoxes per bundlePrice per bundlePrice per box
7x7 to 10x1050$32.50$0.65
12x1250$34.65$0.69
14x1450$37.50$0.75
16x1650$45.65$0.91
17x1750$41.50$0.83
18x1850$47.65$0.95
20x2050$57.00$1.14
24x2425$67.00$2.68
18x2625$66.75$2.67

The setup fee is the part that changes with volume. Spread over a minimum order it adds a noticeable amount to each box; spread over a larger order it adds very little. Using the 14x14 price as an example:

Order (14x14)BoxesBoxes costWith $75 setupEffective per box
5 bundles (minimum)250$187.50$262.50$1.05
10 bundles500$375.00$450.00$0.90
20 bundles1,000$750.00$825.00about $0.83

These figures are before shipping. Bundle discounts apply automatically on larger quantities where they are offered, so a larger order may come in lower than the table shows. The cart shows your actual total before you pay.

How to compare against stock boxes

Stock box prices vary by supplier, region and quantity, so the only stock price that matters is the one on your own invoice. Once you have it, the comparison is simple arithmetic:

  1. Find your effective custom price per box for the size and quantity you would actually order, including the setup fee.
  2. Subtract what you pay per stock box of the same size. The difference is your printing premium per box.
  3. Multiply by the boxes you use per month. That is what printed boxes cost you each month over plain ones.
  4. Ask whether that amount is worth it for putting your name, number and ordering link in front of every delivery and takeout customer.

There is no universal right answer. A shop that leans on delivery may decide the monthly premium is an easy yes. A shop that is mostly dine-in may decide it is not worth it yet.

Price is not the only trade-off, either. Stock boxes are often available from local suppliers with little or no wait, in whatever quantity you need, with no artwork to prepare. Custom boxes take planning: you approve a proof, production runs 7 to 10 business days after proof approval, and then the order ships to you. You also need room to store a larger order. The boxes ship flat, which helps, but they still need a dry spot.

When plain stock boxes still make sense

Printing is not the right move for every pizzeria at every stage. Stock boxes are often the better fit when:

  • Your volume is very low. If 250 boxes of a size would sit on a shelf for months, the setup fee and the cash tied up in inventory work against you.
  • You are testing a menu or concept. If you are not sure which sizes will sell, or whether a pizza night will become a permanent offering, wait until the numbers settle before committing to printed stock.
  • Your name or logo is about to change. Finish the rebrand first; there is no point printing a design you will retire.
  • You have almost no storage. A minimum order of 5 bundles is still a real stack of boxes.
  • A size rarely sells. You can print your core sizes and keep plain boxes for the odd size that only moves a few times a week.

A sensible middle path

You do not have to switch everything at once. One approach is to print your best-selling size first, since that is where the setup fee spreads furthest and where the most customers will see your name. Add other sizes once you know how fast you go through them.

Keeping the design simple also helps. A one-colour logo on a kraft box can look sharp and reads clearly on a corrugated surface. If you are choosing between flutes, B flute is thicker and more crush-resistant, which helps when boxes get stacked in delivery bags; E flute is thinner, with a smoother surface for printing.

If you are unsure which sizes to print, our pizza box size guide walks through the options, and you can browse personal sizes, 12, 14 and 16 inch boxes and large and party sizes. If you want to see and handle the materials before ordering, the Avco sample packaging kit is $25.

Getting started

Every custom order includes a free digital proof, so you can see your artwork on the box before anything is printed. Production starts only after you approve it. Answers to common questions about artwork, minimums and shipping are on our FAQ page.
