A large pizza is usually 14 inches across and cut into 8 slices, though some shops cut it into 10. A medium is usually 12 inches with 8 slices, a small is about 10 inches with 6 slices, and an extra-large is 16 inches with 8 to 12 slices. Sizes are not standardized, so the same name can mean a different pie at different pizzerias.

Pizza sizes and slice counts at a glance

The table below shows the most common US sizes, the usual number of slices, and the area of each pie, which is the fairest way to compare how much pizza you actually get.

Size nameDiameterTypical slicesArea (approx.)
Personal6–8"About 428–50 sq in
Small10"About 679 sq in
Medium12"About 8113 sq in
Large14"8 (some shops cut 10)154 sq in
Extra-large16"8–12201 sq in
New York large18"About 8 wide slices254 sq in

Treat these as typical figures, not rules. One chain's "large" may be another's "medium," and a pizzeria can cut any pie into as many pieces as it likes. If the exact count matters, for a party order or a menu you are writing, ask the shop or check its menu for the diameter.

How many slices in a large pizza?

Most large pizzas are 14 inches and come cut into 8 slices. Some pizzerias cut their large into 10 smaller slices, and a few call a 16-inch pie their large. Each slice of an 8-cut 14-inch pie is about 7 inches long from tip to crust and roughly 5.5 inches wide at the crust edge.

In New York and many East Coast slice shops, the "large" or standard whole pie is 18 inches, still cut into 8 slices. Those slices are much bigger: about 9 inches long and around 7 inches across the crust, which is why one or two of them make a meal.

How many slices in a medium pizza?

A medium pizza is usually 12 inches and cut into 8 slices. Some shops cut mediums into 6. Because a medium has fewer square inches than a large but often the same number of slices, each medium slice is noticeably smaller, about 6 inches long.

How many slices in small, personal and extra-large pizzas?

  • Personal (6–8 inches): usually 4 slices, sized for one person. Some places serve them uncut.
  • Small (10 inches): usually 6 slices, enough for one hungry adult or two light eaters.
  • Extra-large (16 inches): usually 8 slices, but 10 or 12 is common so the pieces stay manageable.
  • 18 inches and up: 8 large slices is the New York standard. Pies of 20 inches or more are often cut into 12 or more pieces for parties.

How big is a large pizza compared to a medium?

Pizza grows faster than the diameter suggests, because area depends on the radius squared (area = pi x radius x radius). Going from 12 to 14 inches only adds 2 inches across, but it adds about 41 square inches of pizza, roughly 36% more. Here is how the common sizes compare:

  • 12-inch medium: about 113 square inches.
  • 14-inch large: about 154 square inches.
  • 16-inch extra-large: about 201 square inches, roughly 1.8 times a 12-inch.
  • 18-inch: about 254 square inches, roughly 2.2 times a 12-inch.

Two practical takeaways:

  • One 18-inch pie has more pizza than two 12-inch pies (254 square inches versus about 226).
  • Price per square inch is the fair comparison. Divide the price by the area to see which size is the better deal. Larger pies are often cheaper per square inch, but not always.

Slice counts for square and sheet pizza

Rectangular pizzas, such as Sicilian, grandma and Detroit-style, are cut into squares or rectangles instead of wedges, so the count depends on the pan size and how the shop cuts it.

  • Half sheet: a pie baked for a 12x17 box is often cut into about 8 to 12 rectangles. In area it lands between a 14-inch and a 16-inch round.
  • Full sheet: a party pie baked for an 18x26 box is commonly cut into 20 to 30 or more squares, depending on how big you want each piece. That is nearly as much pizza as three 14-inch pies.
  • Detroit-style: usually cut into 4 to 8 thick rectangles, each with a crisp, cheesy corner or edge.

Round pies can be square-cut too. A "party cut" or "tavern cut" slices a round pizza into a grid of small squares, which gives many more, smaller pieces. It is common for Chicago tavern-style and St. Louis pizza, and it works well for kids' parties and office lunches where people want to take a little of several kinds.

How many slices per person?

As a starting point, plan about 3 slices of a 14-inch pie per adult and 2 per child, with more for teenagers and big appetites. With 18-inch slices, many adults stop at 2. If you are feeding a group, our guide to how many pizzas to order for a party has a full chart for 10 to 50 people.

Why slice counts vary

  • No industry standard. Size names are set by each pizzeria or chain, so "medium" and "large" are labels, not measurements.
  • Hand-stretched dough. A 14-inch pie may come out at 13.5 or 14.5 inches depending on who stretched it.
  • Crust style. Thin-crust shops often cut more pieces so slices stay easy to hold. Thick and pan pies are often cut into fewer, heavier pieces.
  • Customer requests. Most shops will cut a pie into 6, 8, 10, 12 or squares if you ask.

Matching pizza sizes to boxes

For shop owners, pie size drives box size. A round pie goes in a square box that matches its diameter, so a 14-inch large ships in a 14x14x2 box. If your hand-stretched pies run big, size up so the crust does not press against the walls. Our pizza box size guide lists every size we print and the pie each one fits.

Our custom pizza boxes come in 14 sizes from 7x7 to 24x24, plus 12x17 and 18x26, in white or kraft. They start at $32.50 per bundle of 50 with a 5-bundle minimum, and every order gets a free digital proof before production. All boxes are made in the USA.
